Employers: Here’s What You Can Do While You Wait for Background Check Results

As you adapt to a new workplace reality in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, thorough background checks on prospective hires are more important than ever. You may not be able to meet job candidates in person, so they serve as a crucial means to fully vet applicants.

On average, it takes five to seven business days to obtain background check results at this time. View this waiting period as an opportunity to help turn your team member’s new job anxiety into genuine excitement about joining your company.

How to Keep Candidates Engaged

In a study by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), close to 70 percent of employees surveyed said they were more likely to stay with a company for at least three years if they experienced great onboarding. Start the process early, and your new hire will be ready to hit the ground running on Day One.

  • Announce their pending arrival. Send an announcement to the rest of the company, introducing your new employee and their start date. Include their name, job titlebasic responsibilities, and the team they’ll be working on. Add some personal information to help people get to know them – such as favorite hobbies, interests, or foods. Current employees can then begin to see if they’ll have anything in common, and this helps break the ice with everyone.
  • Provide a staff directory. An online, up-to-date directory is an excellent option. Not only will it help your new hire get to know who’s who, but they’ll also feel more comfortable introducing themselves as they meet colleagues during their early days on the job. And, they’ll know to whom they should address any questions.
  • Take care of necessary paperwork. Get as much pre-employment paperwork as possible completed before an employee’s first day. These tasks are better off done ahead of time when a person has a lot less on their mind than they do when facing first-day jitters. Instead of wasting valuable onboarding time on tedious forms and signatures, have your new employee complete these tasks electronically.
  • Have their workstation ready. Nothing says “welcome” less than not having a fully-equipped desk or a connected telephone when you arrive at your brand new workplace. Make sure your new hire’s space is ready for them, including their computer, phone, email, and network access. Choose a welcoming gift, such as a company tee shirt or a bunch of balloons, to set a friendly tone right from the start. This step shows a person that they are a valued member of your organization. It also helps solve potential logistical issues right away, so their first day can be meaningful and productive.
